Best Monitors for MacBook Air and MacBook Pro (One-Cable USB-C)

The simplest MacBook desk has no dock at all: one USB-C or Thunderbolt cable to a monitor that shows the picture, charges the laptop and adds USB ports. These two do exactly that.

Before buying a second one, check how many external displays your chip supports: M1 and M2 Airs support one.

1. Best one-cable 4K monitor

Dell UltraSharp 27 4K USB-C Hub Monitor

Dell model U2723QE · USB-C monitor

One USB-C cable carries 4K video, up to 90W of charging, a USB hub and Gigabit Ethernet. A complete desk for a MacBook Air or 14-inch Pro without a separate dock.

Works with
USB-C with DisplayPort 1.4 Alt Mode (also HDMI, DisplayPort in)
Monitors
27-inch 4K (3840×2160) 60Hz IPS Black panel
Charging
Up to 90W over the upstream USB-C cable
Ports
USB 3.2 Gen 2 hub incl. USB-C 15W downstream, Gigabit Ethernet (RJ45)

Best for: A one-cable desk: the monitor itself charges the laptop and adds USB ports and wired Ethernet, so you may not need a dock.

Watch out: 90W is less than a 16-inch MacBook Pro can draw under heavy load. Works as one 4K screen; it does not lift your Mac’s monitor limit.

2. Best for sharp Mac text

Apple Studio Display

Apple model Studio Display (Thunderbolt 5) · USB-C monitor

5K at 218 ppi matches macOS’s Retina scaling, so text looks as crisp as on the laptop. Up to 96W charging, Thunderbolt 5, a 12MP Center Stage camera and six speakers.

Works with
Apple silicon Macs on macOS Tahoe 26.3.1+; MacBook Air M1 and later
Monitors
27-inch 5K Retina (5120×2880, 218 ppi), 600 nits, 60Hz
Charging
Up to 96W over Thunderbolt 5
Ports
1× Thunderbolt 5 downstream, 2× USB-C 10Gbps; 12MP Center Stage camera, six speakers, three mics

Best for: The sharpest Mac desk: native 5K at 218 ppi keeps macOS text as crisp as the built-in display, plus a webcam and speakers.

Watch out: The standard stand tilts only; height adjustment is an optional stand. Requires a recent macOS (Tahoe 26.3.1 or later).

4K or 5K on a Mac?

A 27-inch 5K panel like the Studio Display has 218 pixels per inch, the density macOS is designed around. A 27-inch 4K panel like the U2723QE is sharp, but macOS scales it to a size between its native modes. Most people find 4K at 27 inches perfectly usable; designers and anyone who stares at text all day notice the 5K difference.

Charging over the monitor cable

Dell lists up to 90W over the U2723QE’s upstream USB-C, and Apple lists up to 96W for the Studio Display. A 16-inch MacBook Pro under heavy load can draw more, so keep its own charger handy for long renders.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Apple Studio Display work with a MacBook Air M1?

Yes. Apple lists the 13-inch MacBook Air (M1, 2020 and later) as compatible, on macOS Tahoe 26.3.1 or later.

Do I need a dock with a USB-C monitor?

Often not. The U2723QE adds USB ports and Ethernet, and both monitors charge the laptop over the same cable. Add a dock only if you need more ports or a second monitor.
