Best Docking Stations for Surface Laptop and Surface Pro

Recent Surface Laptop and Surface Pro models charge and dock over USB-C, so you no longer need the old Surface Connect dock. What matters is the port: Microsoft says a USB4/Thunderbolt 4 connection supports two 4K monitors at 60Hz, while a plain USB-C connection supports one.

Which Surfaces get two 4K monitors?

Microsoft lists USB4/Thunderbolt 4 Surfaces, including Surface Laptop 5, 6 and 7th Edition and Surface Pro 8 through 11th Edition, as optimal hosts for its Thunderbolt 4 Dock with two 4K displays at 60Hz. Older USB-C Surfaces such as Surface Laptop 4 and Surface Pro 7 connect at USB-C speed with one 4K display.

You can add more screens by daisy-chaining DisplayPort MST monitors, at reduced resolution and refresh rate, per Microsoft.

Charging

The Thunderbolt 4 Dock passes up to 96W and the USB4 Dock up to 65W. Microsoft notes Surface Laptop Ultra needs at least 115W and may not charge in use on the Thunderbolt 4 Dock.
