Best Docking Stations for Windows Laptops (Dell XPS, Thunderbolt 4, USB-C)
Windows laptops vary far more than Macs. The port on the side decides everything: a Thunderbolt 4 port is guaranteed to drive two 4K monitors, while a plain USB-C port may carry one screen, or none.
Find the lightning-bolt icon next to your port, or search your model’s spec sheet for “Thunderbolt 4”, then pick below.

Thunderbolt 4: two 4K monitors guaranteed
Intel’s Thunderbolt 4 certification requires the laptop to support two 4K displays or one 8K display, and laptop charging on at least one port. Any laptop with a Thunderbolt 4 port can use the TS4 or OWC dock at full capability.
Example: Dell lists two Thunderbolt 4 ports on the XPS 13 9350 and support for two 4K external displays with the built-in screen on. That laptop pairs well with the CalDigit TS4.
Plain USB-C: check video support first
A USB-C port without Thunderbolt or USB4 may lack DisplayPort Alt Mode entirely. Check the manual for a DisplayPort logo next to the port. If it has Alt Mode, the Anker 565 gives you two screens cheaply. If it does not, or you want three screens, use a DisplayLink dock like the Anker Prime.
Skip the TS5 Plus on Thunderbolt 3 Windows laptops
CalDigit excludes Thunderbolt 3 Windows PCs from its Thunderbolt 5 products. Older Thunderbolt 3 Windows laptops should stick with the TS4.
Frequently asked questions
Will a Thunderbolt dock work on a USB-C port?
Usually with reduced features. Thunderbolt docks fall back to USB-C mode, which can limit displays, speed and charging. Match the dock to your port.
How many monitors can a Dell XPS 13 9350 run?
Dell’s documentation lists up to two 4K external displays with the built-in screen on, and up to three 4K with it off.
